A Map of Our Planned Travels

For those of you who are a bit challenged on Chinese geography, below is a map of the itinerary of our trip.  We fly between all cities except we will take a train from Shanghai to Nanjing (in the middle) and from Shenyang to Dalian (in the north) and a ferry from Hong Kong to Macau and back again (in the south).   From Atlanta, we fly on Delta (what else?) to Seattle and thence to Shanghai.  Returning, we fly from Dalian to Beijing to Detroit and finally to Atlanta.  It is exhausting to even think about it!

We plan one night in Shanghai, two nights in Nanjing, three nights in Chengdu, one night in Xi'an, five nights in Beijing, five nights in Hong Kong, two nights in Shenyang and two nights in Dalian (in this order).

We will be traveling with our younger son, Nick, and his lady friend, Tianqi Gao, from the start through Beijing.  Then, they will head back to Nanjing (her home city) for two days and return to the U.S. while we head to Hong Kong.

We will also be meeting Alice's former visiting scholars in Chengdu, Beijing and Shenyang, which should add immeasurably to the trip.

As you can see from the map below that although we are cramming our three weeks in China very full we are hardly making a dent in the country.  Granted, most of the western region is unpopulated and rugged but there are still many areas we will not visit.  Well, if we like China and have a future opportunity to visit, that will give us plenty to anticipate.
